Create in me a clean heart, O God —Psalm 51:10 (KJV).

If I am to give my heart to the Lord, it must be a “clean” heart! Is mine clean? The Lord Jesus tells us what there is in each of our hearts (Matthew 15:19). And does not my own conscience witness that this is true? How many thoughts and fancies are in my heart which I should be ashamed for any one to see! And yet God is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Let me remember that every evil thought which I allow to remain within dims my sight of God; for it is the “pure in heart” that shall see God. What shall I do in this matter today?

Only God can “create in me a clean heart;” but he has shown me some of the ways in which he will help me to keep it clean. “And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” (1 John 3:3 NASB). So that the more I think of Christ today, of what he is and has done for me, and the more I think of and long for his coming again—the more my heart will be kept clean.

Almighty God, from whom no secrets are hid, cleanse the thoughts of my heart by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
